Overview
The J201 (and its surface-mount counterpart MMBFJ201) is an ultra-low-noise N-channel depletion-mode junction field-effect transistor (JFET) manufactured by InterFET, Linear Integrated Systems, Fairchild (onsemi), and Siliconix. Available in a 3-pin through-hole TO-92 and SMD SOT-23 package, it is renowned as the undisputed classic JFET for musical instrument audio electronics and DIY guitar effects pedals.
Operating with an ultra-high input impedance (), low noise voltage (), and a uniquely narrow gate cutoff voltage (), the J201 biased near its operating point closely mimics the square-law transfer characteristics and warm soft-clipping harmonic distortion of 12AX7 vacuum-tube triodes. It is the standard active component inside iconic analog preamps, Runoffgroove tube amp emulator pedals (Dr. Boogey, Professor Tweed, Thor), condenser microphone capsules, and acoustic guitar piezo preamps.

Biasing the J201 (The 4.5V Drain Rule)
Due to semiconductor manufacturing variations, and vary between individual J201 batches. For optimal headroom and musical tube-like soft saturation:
- Replace the fixed drain resistor with a or trimpot.
- Measure the DC voltage at Pin 1 (Drain) with a multimeter.
- Adjust the trimpot until the Drain sits at approximately DC (half the 9V supply voltage).
Common mistakes
- Buying counterfeit through-hole TO-92 parts: Major silicon foundries (Fairchild/onsemi) discontinued through-hole TO-92 J201 production years ago. Most unbranded TO-92 J201s from cheap marketplace sellers are relabeled 2N5457 or 2N3904 BJTs that will not bias properly. Use genuine InterFET / Linear Systems TO-92 parts or buy genuine surface-mount MMBFJ201 (SOT-23) on SMD-to-DIP breakout adapter boards.
- Forgetting the high-value gate ground reference resistor: JFET gates have negligible DC current, but without a DC return path to ground (such as a resistor), stray charges accumulate on the gate and shift the bias point into permanent cutoff.
