Overview
The 2N4401 (and its surface-mount version MMBT4401) is a general-purpose NPN bipolar junction transistor manufactured by onsemi, Fairchild, STMicroelectronics, and Central Semiconductor. Housed in a through-hole TO-92 package with standard Emitter - Base - Collector (E-B-C) lead configuration, it is widely stocked as the direct step-up upgrade to the standard 2N3904.
While sharing the same pinout, casing, and voltage rating as the 2N3904, the 2N4401 is rated for a continuous collector current of (three times greater than the 2N3904's limit). Featuring a transition frequency () of and low saturation voltage ( at ), it is the go-to through-hole transistor for driving mechanical relays, high-intensity LED arrays, piezoelectric buzzers, small DC toy motors, and high-speed saturation switches.

Common mistakes
- Assuming base resistor for 2N3904 works identically at 500mA: When switching heavy loads (), standard base resistors will starve the base of current, leaving the transistor in active/linear mode where it dissipates several watts. For a load, provide at least of base drive () or use a MOSFET (like 2N7000 or IRLML6344).
Notes
- Suffix Guide:
2N4400is a lower-gain () variant;2N4401is the full performance part;MMBT4401is the SOT-23 surface-mount package.
