Overview

The TPS61200 (packaged in 10-pin VSON TPS61200DRCT) is a low-input-voltage synchronous boost converter from Texas Instruments designed for single-cell alkaline, NiMH, or Li-Ion battery power supplies and energy harvesting systems.

It is capable of starting up into full load at an input voltage as low as 0.5 V0.5\text{ V}, and once running, continues operating down to 0.3 V0.3\text{ V}. Crucially, the TPS61200 features Down-Mode operation: if input voltage exceeds the output voltage setting, the converter automatically switches to a buck-like down-conversion mode to maintain regulation without pass-through voltage spikes.

Common mistakes

  • Omitting the auxiliary capacitor on VAUX: A 100 nF100\text{ nF} ceramic capacitor must be connected between VAUX (Pin 1) and GND to support low-voltage startup and internal gate drive bootstrap.
  • Improper UVLO resistor calculation: Leaving the UVLO pin floating defaults to a high lockout threshold. Tie UVLO directly to VIN if external undervoltage lockout tuning is not required.

Notes

  • Down-Mode Feature: Standard boost converters short VINV_{IN} to VOUTV_{OUT} via their body diode if VIN>VOUTV_{IN} > V_{OUT}. The TPS61200's Down-Mode disconnects the body diode to maintain output voltage regulation.
